Artist's Comments

Okay, this is a scaled-up model of american cockroach (Periplaneta Americana)

The body is about 10cm long, so it is in scale 5:1.

Body is carved from urethane foam and covered by Magic Sculpt epoxy putty. Antenaes and spikes on legs are made from Cernit-polyester clay.

Colors are Citadel miniatures-acrylic colors, added in multiple, thin wash-layers.

Actually this is the original model of those prehistoric cockroach models, which I made for finnish museum of natural history. I just re-sculpted this one to match the anatomy of P.americana (after I made five resin casts)

I think the kitchen was one of the best places to take the photos! ;)

When I first saw American Cockroach by ~Mallimaakari I thought it was an actual insect as opposed to a sculpt. The entirety of the piece, from the shapes and proportions of the limbs and segments; right down to the details on the antenna demonstrating the accuracy to the real life bug. That is absolutely AMAZING. Your attention to detail is astounding. How long did it take to make this one?

One just never gets quite finished learning eh? ;) I'd love to have the time, space and money to do lots of sculpting myself. But that'll have to wait... some day though! Some day! You're very good at it, guess that's why you're working at a museum? :) (I'm so envious of you!! *getting green*)

So you are poor art student, who lives in a small cardboard box, huh? Just kidding, Im sorry:D
I really hope, that someday you have enough time, money and place to start sculpting.

Personally I like much more to sculpt than draw. Maybe, because the sculpture is a 3D, physical object, that I can touch and handle. Also sculpting is challenging in many other ways, than drawing/painting, but I know that making good drawings and paintings needs also a talents and practice

The way I get into a museum... Well I am only paleo-sculptor in here finland, who has made as much of different kind of prehistoric animal models... And the museum doesn,t have enough model makers. Maybe the quality of my models also pleases the museum curators.

The way, how museum knows me, is because two years ago I tryed to get study taxidermy into the museum. But there were no place for new students, because of the construction work. From august 2005 the museum was close to the public. In november 2006 people from museum take an contact on me and asked, if I can do some prehistoric animal models for their new life,s history-exhibition. After seeing finished amphibian model, wich I delivered to the museum at may, they wanted hire me.

Haha! Indeed, a poor syudent in a box! But the box is quite nice, but not very big and contains me and two nice snakes! So I'm quite happy with it anyway! :) I went to Kyrkerud last summer and did some sculpting, that was so very fun! I loved it... I didn't like it much when I was in art school, but now that I could do thing I myself wanted to do it was fun! :aww: That was clay and plaster sculpting of course, not nice other mediums... like what you use.
I do enjoy drawing and painting mostly, but sculpting and even sewing is quite new to me, but very fun. Too bad all of it's so time consuming! And I'm still (one year later) very annoyed that I forgot my dragon head sculpture at Kyrkerud! :hmm: I did get the octopus and lady sculpture with me though. Well well, I'll try and go back there some summer to get a new shot at sculpting! :)
You're a taxidermist?! :O_o: Interesting... Darn, now I really wanna go to a museum... I haven't been in one since 1997!!
