1:22 scale reconstruction based on Gregory Paul's skeletal drawing. Mixed media: cardboard, ironwire, Das clay, epoxy clay and acrylic paints. This is a commission that I made for a collector.

This one is really wonderful!! :D I love the shape, colours and details! Very well done Vili! How long did it take you to make it? (And how much do you charge for one anyway?)

Thank you! The coloration (the red back, to be specific) is the only part I dont like at all. But my friend wanted it to look like this and he was the one, who got the money;)

It take about 70 hours to build this and it costs about 750 euros=7,883.53 SEK

You're welcome! It looks so nice!

*lol* Why not? Which colour/s would you have preferred? :)

Awww, that's too much for me. It'd have been cool to have a raptor or something from you. But as a student I can't afford that much. :( Pretty cool you can sell them for that price though! I always have to "give" my stuff away at really low prices or not at all. :hmm: ...Yet!

Well, predatory animals tend to camouflage to their environment. And Carnotaurus was a big animal. A red back would expose the lurking carnotaurus to it's prey animals, which (like most, or maybe all dinosaurs) had a good color vision.

The green color is fine to me. I would make the stripes darker red. But If I could have a choice to decide about the color of this model the result woulfd be a brown animal with dark beige belly and mottled back

yes, there was many working hour involved with this one. But smaller models are cheaper. For example I could do a small raptor (about 20 cm long) or any creature for a price of 1,042.96 SEK

That's true. On the other hand, birds can be pretty colourful and a dinosaur of that size might not be able to hide very well anyway, right? So maybe it was colourful. And it's not like you painted it bright red! That would have looked a bit weird.

That sounds nice too! :) I always used to think of dinosaurs as basically grey before. But now I don't know... they had feathers and stuff. :) But I guess colours of grey, brown, yellowish ocher, green, black and white could have been usual colours. And stripes and spots of course.

Awww, that'd be so cool! Maybe later though. Right now is not a good time to spend a 1000:- on a cool thing. I need a new computer and after christmas the wallet is always a bit empty. ;)
I might ask you to do it later though. Hey, unpainted... how much would that be? :)

Anyways, hope you had a nice Christmas and holidays! :holly:

Well, modern birds are in a different kind of ecological roles than extinct (predatory) dinosaurs, so they aren't the best candidates for coloration. And most of the colorful birds are small, flock living herbi/insectivores.

I think that the best way to do a reasonable coloration for a reconstruction of a prehistoric animal is to figure out it's physiology, environment and it's possible ecological role.

Making unpainted model works for me too! The prize would be about 25-30 percent lower.

Thanks! I had a nice christmas for a long time! Happy holidays and year 2010!

Loistavaa työtä!
Todella hieno kyllä, tälläkin kertaa. Tästä näkyy hyvin, kuinka erikoinen otus tuo lihansyöjähärkä oikein olikaan.
Olishan tuollainen aikamoinen aarre omassakin kirjahyllyssä. :)

Kiitos kovasti!

Hmmm :P
